Have you ever wanted to try your hand at a variety of creative crafts but didn’t know where to start? Or maybe you're craving a peaceful escape where you can unwind, reconnect with nature, and get a little messy!
A Taste of Crafts is the creative retreat you’ve been waiting for.
Join us for a 2-day immersive experience designed for curious minds and creative souls—no experience necessary. Set in a tranquil, rural Manitoba setting, this retreat is all about reigniting your creativity by trying new things, connecting with your like-minded hosts Robert and Sherry, and making beautiful, meaningful things with your hands.
What You’ll Experience
This retreat is intentionally designed to give you a little taste of four different crafts, so you leave feeling inspired and maybe even a little bit obsessed with a new one or two.
Here’s what’s on the menu:
Explore & Connect
Choose 4 mini crafts to experience from the 11 listed below. Sherry and Robert will then customize a retreat package that revolves around your 4 choices.
Nature-Inspired Mobiles with God's Eyes
(Mobiles) Discover the harmony of nature and craft by designing hanging mobiles using traditional God's Eyes alongside natural materials found on the land. Learn balance, composition, and creative expression with your objects and Ojo de Dios.
Catch a Dream!
(Dream Catchers) Crafting with Nature: Create your very own dream catcher using natural materials gathered on retreat combined with feathers, sinew, and beads. In this hands-on activity, you’ll learn traditional skills while weaving your personal style and intention into your creation. Connect with nature, creativity, and a bit of the sacred as you craft something both beautiful and meaningful.
Words in the Wild
(Poetry) Step into stillness and let the natural world inspire your pen. You'll explore the quiet connection between your inner landscape and the one around you. Whether you’re capturing a moment, a memory, or a mood, this activity invites reflection, presence, and creative discovery under open skies.
Beneath the Paper Sky
(Origami) Find stillness in the simple act of folding paper. Beneath the Paper Sky invites you into the meditative world of origami—a quiet, hands-on activity where paper becomes poetry. In this beginner-friendly session, you’ll learn the foundational folds of this ancient Japanese art, creating delicate shapes inspired by nature and guided by gentle instruction. Whether you craft a crane, a snowflake, or a tiny creature, each fold becomes a mindful moment, grounded in calm and curiosity. More than just learning a new skill—it’s a chance to reconnect with your hands, your breath, and the beauty of simplicity.
Broken into Bloom
(Mosaic Tiling) What’s broken can still become beautiful. In Broken into Bloom, you’ll explore the quiet, transformative art of mosaic tiling—a process of arranging scattered pieces into patterns that hold both strength and story. This hands-on activity introduces you to the foundational techniques of mosaic-tiling: selecting and shaping tiles, composing a design, applying adhesive, and grouting your finished piece. Along the way, you’ll learn to trust your eye, your hands, and the slow rhythm of creating something whole from fragments. You might craft a small panel, a coaster, or a freeform piece inspired by the landscape—but more than that, you’ll be creating space for imagination, reflection, and subtle transformation.
Rhythms of the Land
(Drumming) Feel the beat of something ancient. In Rhythms of the Land, you’re invited to explore the grounding power of rhythm in a warm, welcoming space. This hand drumming session is designed for beginners—no musical background needed, just an open heart and a willingness to listen. Through simple, intuitive rhythms and easy-to-follow guidance, you'll connect with your breath, your body, and the natural rhythms around you. Whether you're seeking play, presence, or just a new way to express yourself, this is drumming as you've never experienced it: slow, soulful, and deeply human.
Lines in Motion
(Gesture & Contour Drawing) Explore the art of truly seeing. Lines in Motion is a quiet invitation to slow down, observe with intention, and draw with presence. In this beginner-friendly activity, you’ll be introduced to the expressive techniques of gesture drawing—capturing movement and energy—and contour drawing, where your eyes and hand move as one, tracing the world’s details in real time. Using simple art materials, you’ll learn to let go of perfection and embrace the natural flow of your own line. This practice becomes less about the final drawing and more about your creative process. This activity offers space to reconnect—with nature, your creativity, and the quiet joy of drawing what you see, not what you think you see!
Loomed Light
(Bead Looms) There is a kind of light that comes not from the sun, but from your own steady hands. In Loomed Light, you’ll be guided through the gentle, rhythmic process of beading on a loom—a timeless practice of pattern, patience, and presence. This activity invites you to tune in and focus, one bead at a time. As threads stretch across the frame, you'll weave small pieces of colour into form—beads that catch and hold the light, strung together with intention. Each motion becomes a quiet meditation, each pattern a reflection of the radiance within.
Marks of the Hand
(Leather Work) There’s something timeless about working with leather—its texture, its scent, its ability to hold both form and memory. In Marks of the Hand, you’ll be guided through the foundational techniques of leather tooling and hand-stitching, learning how to shape and mark this natural material with imagination and intention. This activity begins with an introduction to tooling—using traditional hand tools to stamp simple patterns or textures into vegetable-tanned leather. From there, you’ll learn how to hand-stitch your piece using classic saddle stitching techniques, slowly bringing it all together into a small, functional item like a key fob, bookmark, or small pouch. As the leather warms beneath your hands and your design begins to take shape, you’ll leave with a piece that carries both your effort and your energy.
Stitch by Stitch
(Machine Sewing a Canvas Bag) Learn the quiet satisfaction of creating something both beautiful and useful. In Stitch by Stitch, you’ll be gently guided through the fundamentals of machine sewing as you craft your own simple, durable canvas bag—perfect for carrying a book, some tools, or a treasure. This introduces you to the basics of working with a sewing machine: threading the machine, guiding fabric, sewing clean seams, and assembling your bag from start to finish. You'll also explore finishing techniques like hemming, and attaching sturdy straps. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and enjoy the hum of the machine.
Preserving Sweet Moments
(Jam and Jelly Making) Step into the sweet, slow art of preserving with our Jelly & Jam. Rooted in seasonal abundance and creative exploration. Guided by Sherry, you’ll learn the fundamentals of jam and jelly making while engaging all your senses, chopping, mashing, stirring, or simply breathing in the aroma of simmering fruit, the process becomes a meditative and meaningful practice. Whether you’re drawn to the rhythm of cooking, the poetry of food, or the joy of crafting something by hand, this activity offers a chance to slow down and savor. You’ll leave with a jar of your own creation—and a deeper connection to the simple beauty of the moment.
